The Chancery judge hears special cases involving domestic/family matters including: divorce, child custody, adoption, alimony, guardianships, lunacy on commitment hearings, wills and estates of descendants.
The judge also has to handle other matters and settle disputes involving: equity, challenges to state laws, land issues, titles, contracts, emancipation, insurance settlements to minors and property disputes.

The Circuit Court has original jurisdiction over all civil and criminal matters not vested exclusively in another court. Most Circuit Court cases are heard by juries.

Justice Court Judges have jurisdiction over matters in small claims civil cases involving amounts of $3,500 or less, misdemeanor criminal cases and traffic offenses that happen outside a municipality. Justice Court Judges also conduct bond hearings and preliminary hearings in felony criminal cases and can also issue search warrants.
Justice Court judges are the only Mississippi judges that are elected in partisan races. Justice Court judges serve four-year terms.

County Prosecuting Attorney
The County Prosecuting Attorney represents the state in all felony matters before the county’s justice or county court. Also, the Prosecuting Attorney represents the state in criminal cases appealed from justice or county court to circuit court, can present matters to the grand jury, is responsible for all misdemeanor youth court proceedings and all other cases not specified to the District Attorney.
